As per media reports, the attacker–identified as minor as per his alleged marksheet doing rounds– was overpowered by the protesting students and later arrested. Police said they are investigating the matter.

“Man, who brandished the gun and opened fire in Jamia area, has been taken into custody. He is being questioned. The injured, said to be a student, has been admitted to a hospital. Investigation is continuing,” Delhi Police said in a statement.

The injured student, Shadab, was hit by the bullet in his hand and has been admitted to AIIMS. His condition is stated to be stable.

In the video tweeted by news agency ANI, the man brandishing the gun outside the varsity campus can be heard saying “ye lo azadi” (come and take freedom).

The incident took place near the hospital when a protest march was being taken out by students which was called by the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC).

Jamia University has been at the focus of the pan-India protests against the controversial Citizenship Act.

In December last year, the national capital had witnessed violent scenes when several buses, motor-bikes and private vehicles were set ablaze during anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests near south Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area.
