NIA arrests 9 al-Qaeda terrorist in WB and Kerala


New Delhi:  National Investigation Agency In a massive crackdown against terrorism and terror networks in the country on Saturday busted a massive al-Qaeda terror module in the states of West Bengal and Kerala.

As many as nine terror operatives have been arrested from Murshidabad in West Bengal and Ernakulam in Kerala as part of 11 raids across the country conducted by the NIA. While six have been arrested from West Bengal, the other three were nabbed from Kerala.

“As per the preliminary investigation, these individuals were radicalised by Pakistan-based al-Qaeda terrorists on the social media and were motivated to undertake attacks at multiple places including the National Capital Region,” the NIA said in a statement.

Furthermore, the terror module actively raised funds and was planning to travel to Delhi procure arms and ammunition.

“The module was actively indulging in fundraising and a few members of gang were planning to travel to New Delhi to procure arms and ammunition. These arrests have pre-empted possible terrorist attacks in various parts of the country,” the NIA said.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Murshid Hasan, Iyakub Biswas, Mosaraf Hossen (all from Ernakulam), and Najmus Sakib, Abu Sufiyan, Mainul Mondal, Leu Yean Ahmed, Al Mamun Kamal, and Atitur Rehman (from Murshidabad).

The anti-terror probe agency has recovered several incriminating materials from the terrorists, including firearms, body armour and explosive devices.
