PM led committee removes Alok Verma as CBI Director
Two days after being restored as Central Bureau of Investigation director, Alok Verma was on Thursday removed from the post. He is being transferred and made Directorate General Fire Services. The post will go back to M Nageshwar Rao, who was appointed as the acting CBI chief.
The decision was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-headed high-powered select committee today. The select committee comprised Modi, CJI nominee Justice AK Sikri and Congress’ Mallikarjuna Kharge.
The panel had met on Wednesday too. Congress leader Veerappa Moily, meanwhile, called the decision as “revengeful”.
Alok Verma had taken over as the CBI chief after the Supreme Court reinstated him on Tuesday. The SC had set aside the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Centre’s decision to divest him of his powers to function as its head but with a caveat that he will not take any policy decision till a high-level committee goes into the issue afresh
