Don Mukhtar Ansari leaves for Uttar Pradesh jail, Wife moves to SC


Chandigarh: The ambulance in which gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari will be taken to Uttar Pradesh, arrived at Police Lines in Rupnagar, Punjab on Tuesday. Ansari, who faces trial in several cases in the state, was lodged in Punjab jail.

On handing Mukhtar to UP Police Only UP Police,  Ropar SSP Akhil Chaudhary made it clear that no cops from Punjab Police will go along with the UP Police escort.

Earlier, The Supreme Court, on March 26, had ordered the transfer of Ansari to jail in Uttar Pradesh from Punjab to face trials there.

“The Uttar Pradesh government approached the Supreme Court which ordered the transfer of Ansari from Punjab to Uttar Pradesh. In line with Supreme Court’s order, Ansari is be brought to Banda Jail in Uttar Pradesh in tight security and will be lodged in jail (in Uttar Pradesh). Ansari is a history-sheeter of Ghazipur’s Mohmadabad police station,” Prashant Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Law and Order, Uttar Pradesh Police told news agency ANI on Monday.

Ansari’s wife moves SC

Ansari has filed a plea in the Supreme Court through his wife fearing the same fate as Vikas Dubey. He has sought protection to be kept alive. Ansari’s wife moved the SC seeking security and protection to her husband as he’s shifted to Banda jail.

Citing an imminent threat to his life (on account of having successfully contested elections against BJP and being witness to cases against members of BJP in UP), Ansari’s wife has prayed that concerned authorities be directed to ensure he is given a fair trial and is not encountered in the process of participating in the same.
