Govt changes law to set abortion upper limit to 24 weeks
NewDelhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2020 to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. The Bill will be introduced in the upcoming session of Parliament.
Approving the Bill, the Centre said that the proposed law, which increases the limit of termination of pregnancy from 20 to 24 weeks, will ensure reproductive rights to women.
It further said that the move was aimed at discouraging informal termination of pregnancies and reducing the maternal mortality rate.
