Mother-of-five gangraped by 17 men as husband held hostage; 1 suspect detained
Ranchi: In a tragic incident reported from Dumka district of Jharkhand, a 35-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by 17 men as her husband was held hostage Tuesday night. One of the suspects was detained on Wednesday, following a complaint by the woman.
The alleged crime happened under the jurisdiction of under Mufassil police station late Tuesday when the complainant, who is a mother of five children, was on her way back home from a weekly market with her husband.
According to the woman’s statement, she and her husband were returning from the weekly market late Tuesday when the accused intercepted them. They held her husband hostage and then raped her, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
“The woman said she could identify only one person. We have detained the accused for interrogation. If his involvement was found in the crime, he would be sent to jail,” deputy inspector general (DIG) of Santhal region, Sudarshan Mandal and Dumka SP Ambar Lakra said.
The SP further said that the complainant’s statements are not consistent. When he interrogated her, she stated that five men were involved in the crime, the SP said, adding that her medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited.
